The Japanese company Seiko will release a limited edition of 500 units of their Spectrum SVRD001, the first watch in the world that uses flexible e-paper or Electrophoretic Display (EPD).
The design of the watch is similar to a bracelet and the body is made of stainless steel and a black & white e-paper.
It is the first use of electronic ink display technology (otherwise known as Electrophoretic Displays) in a watch. Seiko plans on releasing only 500 of these watches with 200 of them being made available in Japan.
The watch itself is shaped in the form of a bracelet and has a wide viewing angle of 180 degrees. The electronic ink display is extremely thin and energy efficient. The display itself could be bent nearly in half if it was outside of the watch.
It's great to see new innovations come to watches. It will weigh 134g and will be 37mm thick. The new SVRD001 will go on sale starting on January 27th, 2006 for 262500 Yen. The price of one of these 500 units is an extremely affordable 1900 EUR.
